This collection contains the records of both the Kansas Board and Department of Agriculture. The records document the agency's management of a safe food supply, pesticide regulation, environmental protection programs, and water resource programs. A large portion of the records consists of files containing applications, memoranda, and correspondence regarding the registration of pesticides for use throughout the state, or for the licensure of pesticide applicators. Several series contain administrative records such as minutes, agency budget files, correspondence, annual reports, rules and regulations files, and financial records. Others series are composed of subject files discussing the use of ethanol, noxious weed eradication programs, the Farmers Assistance Counseling and Training Service, drought, agricultural marketing, and agricultural education. The collection contains State Fair registration volumes documenting fair attendees, fair exhibits and competitions, and the subsequent winners. Also included in the agency's records are series consisting of inspection reports of meat packing plants and grain warehouses to monitor sanitation requirements with state law, and related plant closure documents. Several series comprise agricultural statistical roles provide census information per town and township, as well as owned land and the agricultural commodities produced on said land. In addition to paper records are slides and photographs of various conferences and farm equipment.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture traces its roots back to 1857, when a group of Kansas farmers called an open air meeting in Topeka to form the Kansas Agriculture Society. The group worked to promote agriculture even before Kansas achieved statehood. In 1872, the Kansas Legislature created the State Board of Agriculture from the structure of the Agriculture Society.
